Housing/Food/Employment Resources

Housing: If you are in need of a place to stay, here are some sites that will help you with what you need.
US Department of Housing & Urban Development  also known as HUD has a wide variety of information on how to find housing. There are listings for each state. Once you choose your state, you'll be able to narrow down your search to your specific county. There you'll find Housing Authority listings, Shelter listings (individual, family, domestic violence, transitional, motel vouchers). You'll also find help hotlines for more information on where to find services.

Even though it may take some time, don't get discouraged. You have your whole life to live and waiting a little while isn't so bad because you know the payoff is on it's way.

There is also information on how to buy a home/keep your home.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Food Pantries: http://foodpantries.org/ will show you a list of food banks/pantries in your area & will let you know how to contact each one. You'll also find on the right side of the page, a list of all the states and how many food pantries are in each state such as New York has 324 (the most) & Delaware has 5 (the least).

Depending on which city you live in, such as San Francisco, you may be able to go to many food pantries per week/month.

Food Stamps: Applying for Food Stamps is another way to receive help with food. Click Here for more information on applying for food stamps. As of now 34 states allow you to apply online. Some states offer screening tools & benefits calculator online as well. In New Jersey a single adult on disability can receive near 200 in food stamps per month. I can imagine if you have children it would be higher, so that is quite a bit of money for food so you're family should not have to go hungry.

If you or your family live in a place without a proper kitchen or you are homeless, you may be able to use your food stamp card at selected restaurants. In San Francisco you can use your food stamp card at Carl's Jr, Subway & some chinese restaurants. It comes in handy if you have no way of cooking. Make sure to ask about this service or request it if you need it.

Holiday Dinner: Around the holidays, many food banks/pantries offer holiday meals to people such as turkey with all the fixings. Make sure to inquire ahead of time especially if you have a family and can't afford a holiday dinner.

There is a place called One Stop Career Center where you can have access to a computer for job searching/free printing/free faxing/free phone calls (all must be job related). You'll find postings of job opportunities as well as workshops & can speak to a career counselor all for free. I used to go here all the time, it's an awesome place and it gives you hope. Visit the site to find one near you.

Receive Mail for Free: If you need to a place to receive mail, you can try General Delivery. For more information visit http://www.ehow.com/how_7527875_mail-general-delivery.html
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Entertainment: If you can't afford to go to the movies or even rent movies, it's okay because most likely your local library will have movies that you can check out. From my experience at different libraries in different states, all the movies have been excellent choices & up to date. You can also find free movies/tv shows on www.youtube.com, I watch all my favorite classic shows on youtube daily.
